Stardew Valley Marriage and Friendship Guide: How to Woo Your Favorite Villager (2023)

Stardew Valley Marriage and Friendship Guide: How to Woo Your Favorite Villager (1)

Building friendships and finding a marriage partner are some of the most rewarding long-term goals inValle Sternentau. You can only have one male or one female at a time (unsurprisingly), but earning friendship hearts from all villagers has other benefits.

This Stardew Valley friendship and marriage guide focuses on single and single villagers who are the only ones available for marriage. Regardless of your character's gender, all single men and women are suitable candidates, but once you're married, everyone else acts like normal villagers.

Stardew Valley Friendship and Marriage Basics

Stardew Valley Marriage and Friendship Guide: How to Woo Your Favorite Villager (2)

Friendship in Stardew Valley is represented by the heart meter. Normal villagers have a maximum of 10 hearts, and your spouse increases it to 12. You can find the full list in the menu above.

how to increase friendship

  • Talk to the villager every day.
  • Give them a gift they like twice a week.
  • Complete quests for them.
  • Make the right decisions about cardiac events.
  • Dance or interact with them at certain festivals.

how to lose friendship

  • Don't talk to a villager.
  • Give them a gift they don't like.
  • Shoot them with the slingshot.
  • Search the trash when they are around.

the best gifts

Giving gifts is one of the best ways to improve your relationships with Stardew Valley villagers. Just take an item they love or like (see ideal gifts below) and place it on top of them. You can do this once a day and twice a week.

The quality of the item has a big impact on the effectiveness of your gifts.

There is one exception to this rule: birthdays. You can always give a villager a birthday present, and you should because it will have a much bigger impact and create a special dialogue. The "Festival of the Winter Star" event gift will also receive a bonus in friendship values.

There are some items that, while not the best, give a nice bonus when given to someone. They include:

  • tree fruits.
  • Maple syrup.
  • choice of life
  • Handmade products, except zero oil and mayonnaise.
  • Cooked food except fried eggs, bread, and an odd bagel.
  • Other flowers besides the poppy.
  • Precious stones and minerals other than quartz.
  • Vegetables other than wheat and hops.

how to marry

The heart events mentioned above are special events unique to each villager. They are unlocked at certain limits, which are usually two, four, six, eight and ten hearts. After the Two Hearts event, you can enter the villagers' room, making it much easier to find them every day.

You cannot multiply more than eight hearts with any marriage candidate without giving him a bouquet. You can buy the bouquet at Pierre's General Store for 200 gold. After that you will unlock all 10 hearts and you can get them in the normal way.

It's worth noting that you can date one or all of the villagers at once. This has consequences, but they only last for a week and prevent marriage to any candidate. Don't try this in real life.

When you reach 10 hearts and want to propose marriage, you must give them the mermaid amulet. It can be purchased from the New Mariner across the broken bridge on the beach for 5000 gold. You will get married three days after gifting a villager, and all other suitors will become normal villagers.

how to divorce

If, for some reason, you are not satisfied with your choice of spouse, Stardew Valley makes it easy to separate and choose another one. Be careful as this will bring them back to 0 hearts and provoke unpleasant conversations about how the marriage didn't work out.

To get divorced, just interact with the book in the mayor's mansion. It will cost 50,000 gold, but if you don't cancel by the end of the day, your spouse and all of their belongings will be removed from your home the next day. However, you can keep any child for what it's worth. There is no shared custody here.

Your ex will be marked as such in the menu and will decline future gifts. However, once you unlock the witch's hut, you can erase all memories of your ex-spouse for the low price of 30,000 gold. It will make it look like you've never met them before.
