“This month's sharp increase in new seller asking prices seems like a late reaction and a sign of increased seller confidence, as we typically see such a large monthly increase early in the spring season. One reason for this surge in confidence may be that the gloomy early-year predictions for the market are looking increasingly unlikely.

What is much more likely is that the market will continue to transition to a more normal level of activity this year after the exceptional activity of the pandemic years. Stable mortgage rates and a generally more positive outlook for the economy are also contributing to increased seller confidence, though more twists and turns are likely to come.

The market remains very price sensitive and it is important that new sellers do not hurt their sales prospects by initially overselling and then underselling, with agents reporting that it is the realistically priced new instructions that sell the best.”

After a cybersecurity review, the Cyberspace Administration of China has ordered Chinese companies that handle critical information to stop buying chips from US-based Micron Technology.

\norte

The review said Micron's chips posed "relatively serious cybersecurity issues" that could "seriously jeopardize China's critical information infrastructure supply chain." The move was widely seen as a retaliation against recent US restrictions on the export of high-end chips and chip-making equipment to China.

\norte

A spokesman for the US Commerce Department said the move "has no basis in fact." Exposure to mainland China and Hong Kong revenue is around 15% of Micron Technology's total revenue.

The price of wheat has fallen to its lowest level in two years, which could bring relief to struggling households around the world.

Wheat futures in Chicago fell below $6 a bushel, the lowest level since April 2021. They gave up expectations of abundant global supplies after a deal to supply Ukrainian grain was extended last week.

The Singapore-based grain trader told Reuters:

"The world wheat market appears to be well supplied, although there is some concern about the US winter crop."

Compared to January 2021, corn prices are 13% higher, while wheat and rice prices are 6% and 4% lower, respectively.

In the UK, the government cut taxpayers' stake in the NatWest bank it bought during the financial crisis.

NatWest agreed to buy around 469 million shares of HM Treasuries at 268.4 pence per share, the price at which they closed on Friday night.

It will cost £1.3bn and will reduce the government's stake in NatWest to 38.69% from around 41% today.

Rosaadds:

NatWest Group's strong balance sheet and capital formation allow us to continue to lend responsibly and support clients and the communities we serve, while delivering sustainable returns to our shareholders, including government."

At its height in 2009, the UK government owned 84% of NatWest– which before changing its name after the accident was called Royal Bank of Scotland.

Last month, the government announced a two-year extension to its business plan. Treasury aims to return NatWest to private ownership by 2025-26, while trying to "achieve the best value for the taxpayer."

In April, the government's share fell to 42%, from a high of 84%, only to fall again this week.

However, Jefferies analysts expected a limited impact on Micron.

They say their main customers in China are consumer electronics companies, such as smartphone and computer makers, not infrastructure providers.

In a research note, Jefferies says:

“Because Micron's DRAM and NAND products have much smaller servers, we believe that most of their revenue in China does not come from telecom and government.

Therefore, the final impact on Micron will be quite limited."

It generated $5.2 billion in revenue from China, including HK$1.7 billion last year, about 16 percent of total revenue, according to Jefferies.

Introduction: China Bans Micron Chips in Escalating Tech Conflict With US

Good morning, and welcome to our ongoing coverage of business, financial markets, and the global economy.

Tensions between Washington and Beijing are rising after China said the products were made by a US chipmaker.Micron TechnologyThey have not passed a cyber security check.

The Chinese government has told users of sensitive computer equipment to stop buying the products.Micron, the largest memory chip maker in the United States.

MicronChina says it failed a network security review announced last month, meaning operators of key infrastructure are now barred from buying from the company.

Announcing the move, theCyberspace Management of Depth(ACC) said:

The review found that Micron's products have serious network security risks, which pose significant risks to China's key information infrastructure supply chain, affecting China's national security.

The ruling could include sectors from telecommunications to transportation and finance, under China's broad definition of critical information infrastructure.

Micron, whose headquarters are located inBoise, Idaho, manufactures products such as DRAM chips, flash memories, and hard drives. through the Crucial, Ballistix Gaming and SpecTek brands.

The move intensifies the ongoing dispute between the US and China over technology and security. Last November, the Biden administration barred approvals of new telecommunications equipment from China's Huawei Technologies and ZTE, saying it posed an "unacceptable risk" to US national security.

Shares of some rival chipmakers rose on the news (a little more about that...).

Micron's ban came as the G7 leaders, meeting in Hiroshima last weekend, announced they wanted to dismiss the threat from China, rather than walk away.

Joe Bidenexplained:

"That means taking steps to diversify our supply chains."
