In all states, MFTs must pass a state-recognized exam to become licensed. The Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) produces this exam. It includes domains, tasks and areas of knowledge.Important for MFTs, Including:

The time required to obtain an MFT license varies by state. for example inCaliforniaYou need two years of supervised clinical experience. Within those two years, you must complete at least 3,000 hours. And 1,700 of those hours must be completed after graduation.
Other states have different requirements. But in general you have to complete2000 to 4000 hourssupervised clinical experience. Some or all of the experiences must be completed after graduation. And don't forget to factor in the time it takes to learn and pass the licensing exam.
